Texans lost $250,000 to roof repair scams last year: avoid upfront payments, BBB advises

SAN ANTONIO - A consumer alert you need to hear after the recent storms.
Experts say scammers are actively trying to take advantage of people with hail damage from the recent storms, especially when it comes to roof repairs.
The Better Business Bureau warns there are key red flags to watch out for if you have real damage to your roof from a hailstorm.
First, don't hire anyone who solicits you by knocking on your front door or shows up in an unmarked vehicle. Scammers often target neighborhoods hardest hit by the storm.
Also, avoid paying upfront or feeling pressured to hand over money before any work is done. Last year, Texans were scammed out of $250,000.
Here’s what experts recommend if you need a new roof or repairs:
“We say just start with your insurance company,” said Jason Meza. “Start with an adjuster, get that process going, and take plenty of pictures because you’ll know the damage before they come to do any surveying. Don’t take that inbound solicitation. Your gut should be telling you to do some research, find three roofers, and get three bids on your own to make sure you're in the right process."
In the end, it’s your home and your repairs. Take your time, make the best decision for you and your home, and work closely with your insurance company.
